PETA has written to the NFL following a recent USDA report indicating that Michael Vick has characteristics that fit the profile for serious antisocial personality disorder. We think Vick should undergo a brain scan before the NFL even considers the possibility of letting him back into the league.

Turkeys still in danger of torture and abuse at factory farm - Please help

We recently sent you an urgent alert about PETA’s shocking new undercover turkey investigation, which produced undercover video footage revealing that workers on a factory farm punched, kicked, and stomped on turkeys. Tens of thousands of people have taken action by writing to the National Turkey Federation asking it to support PETA’s seven-point animal welfare plan, which will help reduce the suffering of turkeys.

Thanks to public outcry, the supervisor who allowed the abuse to persist was suspended. However, to PETA’s knowledge, the violent people responsible for the egregious cruelty shown in the footage still work with turkeys at the farms, so we still need your help! If you haven’t taken action to help turkeys yet, do so now and really make a difference this holiday season!

Turkeys Stomped, Kicked, Punched in Breaking Investigation

The holiday season is upon us, but for turkeys on factory farms, there is nothing to be thankful for. We have just released footage from an undercover investigation that reveals a rarely seen side of the turkey industry. I must warn you that the cruelty to turkeys that we found is horrifying and heart-wrenching.

Men shoved feces and feed in turkeys’ mouths and held turkeys’ heads under water. One worker bragged about jamming a broom stick 2 feet down a turkey’s throat because the turkey had pecked at the worker’s back. The same man mimicked raping a turkey hen whom he had pinned against a shed floor.

Others told PETA’s investigator that they had killed turkeys, including by hitting them with pieces of lumber and pipes. Workers broke turkeys’ necks, sometimes leaving them to suffer for several minutes before trying again or stomping on their heads. A supervisor said that he saw workers kill 450 turkeys with 2-by-4s. Many of the workers kicked and violently threw turkeys, and hens’ beaks were cut with dull pliers. You can watch video footage from the investigation here.

Now that our undercover investigator has exposed what the turkey industry does not want America to see, we need you to help turkeys on factory farms by writing to the National Turkey Federation (NTF) and asking it to support PETA’s seven-point animal welfare plan, which will help reduce the suffering of turkeys.

After writing to the NTF, please consider other ways that you can help birds during this holiday season. You can keep them off your plate this holiday season by choosing mouthwatering vegan options instead, and you can support PETA’s work so that we can continue to investigate and stop animal abuse worldwide.

Thank you for your compassion for animals.

Very truly yours,

Ingrid E. Newkirk
President

Spare a turkey this Thanksgiving

Give Turkeys Something to Be Thankful for This Thanksgiving

Did you know?

  • Modern turkeys are bred to reach slaughter size at 13-16 weeks. 40 years ago the average turkey took 32 weeks to reach slaughter size. This rapid growth results in health complications such as skeletal, respiratory, and cardiovascular disease.
  • Turkey farms often cut off the ends of the turkeys’ beaks and toes. The tip of the beak is cut off with a hot blade, essentially analogous to having your lips cut off. The toes are cut back to the first knuckle without anaesthesia.

Truth exposed about turkeys and the Turkey industry - Farm Sanctuary announces new Research Report & Video

turkey.jpgBreeding toms (male turkeys) languish for roughly one year in dark crowded pens and are typically handled twice a week during “milking” sessions to collect their semen. Their legs are secured in a clamp on a bench, and then the bird is held over the lap of a worker who induces the turkey to ejaculate. The semen is collected through a suction hose and mixed with the semen of other toms.

For each of these breeding males there are more than 20 breeding hens who are also subjected to overcrowding and abusive handling. Roughly twice a week, hens are herded into a room, then one after another, they are held upside down, “cracked open” (as termed by industry representatives) and inseminated in assembly line fashion. As with the males, the females’ legs are clamped into metal forceps during the process as laborers race to inseminate an average of 1,200-1,400 hens within two hours. A worker described how young hens are curious and friendly with employees “until the first couple AIs – and then they run from you…” …more from AdoptATurkey.org
