Campaigns in which you can help to stop animal cruelty and show your love for animals

Guide to recognizing fur - A new Liberation BC publication!

This fur trim is fake.

If you or someone you know owns an item with real fur on it, please snap a pic and send it to info@liberationbc.com. We are working on a guide to recognizing fur for the fall shopping season, and your photos can help to provide necessary visuals. If you would like to help in any way with this project, or would just like more information, please send an email. It’s important to get information out there so that people can distinguish real fur from fake fur, before they buy it, and you can help.

If you are willing to part with any fur or fur-trimmed items (either on a permanent or temporary basis) they would be invaluable as visual aids when tabling.

If you have an item that you’re unsure of, contact us and we may be able to help. Tips can also be found here.

Pappas Furs Campaign

All the cool kids are doing it! Every Saturday
1-3pm
Aberdeen Centre (4400 Hazelbridge Way, Richmond, located conveniently on the 98 B-Line bus (Cambie Road stop))

These protests at Aberdeen Centre are continuing until Pappas Furs is shut down.  Pappas Furs is a Canadian furrier that specializes in clothing of the cruelest kind — enormous fur coats, wraps, and muffs made from the skins of suffering animals.

How many animals are there in a standard full-length fur coat? Anywhere from 10 to 20 foxes, 18 to 20 lambs, or 130 to 200 chinchillas!

How can you help?

Come out to one of these Saturday events and join other compassionate people in speaking out against this cruelty. These events are friendly outreach events. All you need to bring is hope and a smile!

If you can’t make it out to Richmond, you can still help by contacting Aberdeen Centre and politely telling them that you don’t want Pappas Furs in the mall!

Can’t make it out?  Please give Café de Paris a call at 604-687-1418 and let them know that there’s no excuse for foie gras!

If you haven’t contacted the other restaurants on the list of foie gras offenders, now is the perfect time! All it takes is a few minutes and an email account or a phone! The list is constantly being updated, so check back often!

Respect for Chickens

Liberation BC at Cafe de Paris

International Respect for Chickens Day may have been celebrated a few weeks ago, but we know that any day is a good one when it comes to celebrating chickens.  Did you know that chickens are intelligent birds with cognitive abilities rivaling those of small children? It’s true! Did you know that they are very social birds who recognize each other by their facial features and have 24 distinct cries, including separate alarm calls depending on whether a predator is approaching by land or by sea? They are also good at problem-solving!

“As a trick at conferences I sometimes list  attributes, without mentioning chickens, and people think I’m talking about monkeys,” says Dr. Chris Evans, Professor of Psychology at Macquarie University.

Eat Less Meat!

Liberation BC at Cafe de Paris

The Vancouver Humane Society has issued a challenge on the newest page of their website:

Stop animal suffering.
Protect the environment.
Stay healthy.
Save vital resources.

Eat less meat.

We couldn’t agree more! Rising meat consumption is the driving force behind the growth in factory farming that’s ruining our environment, harming our health and condemning billions of animals to misery.  Learn what you can do to stop it!

You can help put a stop to the suffering by speaking flickout against it. Please consider joining other activists at any of the friendly outreach events listed below.

If you can’t make it to an event, there are many other ways to help. You can write letters, send emails, or make phone calls. If you would like to start your own leafletting or outreach event, or if there’s some other way that you feel you can help, send an email to info@liberationbc.com.

Also, consider making a donation to Liberation BC. Your donations help to cover the costs of printing leaflets and signs and purchase important equipment like the tent, the television, and the portable battery. Liberation BC is an all-volunteer organization with no funding, except from donations. Your support is vital to continue to spread this message of compassion and concern for the millions of voiceless animals who are suffering right now.

The animals need you.

Please, donate now.

Madonna , Lindsay Lohan and others, if clothes can keep you warm, why wear fur ?

This is a question I ache over for celebrities , girls, women , and men who choose to wear fur , or fur-lined sweaters, outer coats , wraps.

I mean, if there are clothes that can keep a person warm, why wear fur ?  It only shows a lack of compassion for the animals that suffer extreme pain having their fur and flesh skinned off alive in order to protect the quality of the fur .

Please please learn the truth about how fur is obtained and how animals suffer in order to produce the fur. If you don’t want your skin stolen from your body, then….please don’t encourage the fur traders to steal the fur from the animals which it belongs , and in the process suffer a painful slow death.

Learn more by double - clicking the links below :

a) How is fur obtained ?

b) Fur Farms in China

c) How fur is obtained from dogs and cats

PS You can help these  animals through telling others about it by creating a blog, putting it on myspace, facebook account, you tube, on your own website or by supporting the animal protection agencies on the right panel of this website….and urge people NOT to buy fur or fur-lined sweaters. stop the Fur Council of Canada (FCC) from making false claims that fur is “environmentally friendly.”

Dear Friends and Readers,

Please read the following Action Alert from PETA.  I’ve sent my customised letter based on PETA’s draft and it only takes a couple of minutes to spare hundreds/ thousands of animals from being skinned alive for their fur.

Dear Supporters,

We need your help to stop the Fur Council of Canada (FCC) from making outrageous claims that fur is “environmentally friendly.”

Consumers know that fur is the product of a violent and cruel industry that slaughters millions of individual seals, rabbits, and other animals each year for their skin. By making these false claims, the FCC is trying to deliberately mislead consumers into thinking that buying fur helps the environment.

The fur industry pollutes the Earth with highly toxic chemicals, including sulfuric acid, formaldehyde, and ammonia. A farmed-fur coat takes more than 15 times more energy to produce than a faux-fur coat, and dressing and dyeing furs is classified as high-polluting by Canada’s National Environment Protection Bureau. More than 60 percent of the animals used for fur garments are bred by the Canadian fur industry specifically to be killed for their pelts—which is in direct contradiction to the FCC’s claims of balancing “surplus” populations of animals.

Concerned Canadian citizens have filed a complaint with Canada’s Competition Bureau asking for an investigation. Please click here to add your voice, as there is nothing “green” about killing animals for their fur.

Thank you for all that you do for animals.

Sincerely,

Megan Hartman

Please don’t skin me alive for your fur -lined sweater …

The fur ads you might see in magazines and commercials portray fur coats as a symbol of elegance. But these ads fail to show how the original owners of these coats met their gruesome deaths.

Millions of fur-bearing animals including foxes, raccoons, minks, coyotes, bobcats, lynxes, opossums, nutria, beavers, muskrats, otters, and others are killed each year on fur farms by anal and vaginal electrocution and in the wild by drowning, trapping, or beating. Against fur farms in China! We need 500 signatures!

(I was horrified to see and read for myself and just had to take immediate action to sign the petition. I hope you do as well, please…)

The link to the undercover movie (caution: this video is so cruel that I couldn’t watch it through):

http://www.furisdead.com/feat/ChineseFurFarms/

When undercover investigators made their way onto Chinese fur farms recently, they found that many animals are still alive and struggling desperately when workers flip them onto their backs or hang them up by their legs or tails to skin them. When workers on these farms begin to cut the skin and fur from an animal’s leg, the free limbs kick and writhe. Workers stomp on the necks and heads of animals who struggle too hard to allow a clean cut. When the fur is finally peeled off over the animals’ heads, their naked, bloody bodies are thrown onto a pile of those who have gone before them. Some are still alive, breathing in ragged gasps and blinking slowly. Some of the animals’ hearts are still beating five to 10 minutes after they are skinned. One investigator recorded a skinned raccoon dog on the heap of carcasses who had enough strength to lift his bloodied head and stare into the camera.

clicktoplay4.pngBefore they are skinned alive, animals are pulled from their cages and thrown to the ground; workers bludgeon them with metal rods or slam them on hard surfaces, causing broken bones and convulsions but not always immediate death. Animals watch helplessly as workers make their way down the row.

Undercover investigators from Swiss Animal Protection/EAST International recently toured fur farms in China’s Hebei Province, and it quickly became clear why outsiders are banned from visiting. There are no regulations governing fur farms in China—farmers can house and slaughter animals however they see fit—meaning miserable lives and excruciating deaths. The investigators found horrors beyond their worst imaginings and concluded, “Conditions on Chinese fur farms make a mockery of the most elementary animal welfare standards. In their lives and their unspeakable deaths, these animals have been denied even the simplest acts of kindness.”

HOW YOU CAN HELP

To find out how to contact the Chinese embassy in your country and write them a protestletter click here:
http://www.fmprc.gov.cn/eng/wjb/zwjg/2490/default.htm

To the people from UK - this webpage tells you how to help: http://www.respectforanimals.co.uk/home.php/facts

To the people from USA - peta also have different suggestions to how you can help:
http://www.peta.org/actioncenter/act.asp

To the people from Denmark - On this webpage:
http://www.anima.dk/kampagner/pels/kinesisk_pels/kina_pels.htm
you can order free flyers and posters. There’s also information about how help in other ways.

Because a fur’s origin can’t be traced, anyone who wears any fur at all shares the blame for the horrific conditions on Chinese fur farms. The only way to prevent such unimaginable cruelty is never to wear any fur.

Please tell everyone you know about the horrors of the fur trade by sharing this information with them and showing them the shocking undercover video.

Order PETA’s anti-fur leaflets and posters to distribute outside stores that sell fur and to share with friends, family, and coworkers who still wear fur. Order them on this webpage: http://www.furisdead.com/feat/ChineseFurFarms/

What you can do to stop the seal hunt

Dear Readers,

Over the past few weeks, the world has watched in horror as sealers brandished clubs and rifles, brutally slaughtering thousands of defenceless pups, most only a few weeks old. As you read this today, the Canadian commercial seal hunt has moved northward where the killings will resume — with sealers allowed to kill 275,000 seals this year

Because of the support of many of those who care, An international boycott of Canadian seafood by more than 618,000 individuals, 3,500 restaurants, and major grocery chains in the United States is having an impact. With about 80% of Newfoundland’s fishing revenue coming from shellfish and less than 3% from the seal hunt, consumers have tremendous leverage to end this hunt! Fisherman are fast realizing they stand to lose more from killing seals than they will ever hope to gain.

What else you can do

Get web badges like this one and post them on your blog, website or social network page.

This is a critical time for our campaign, and we need your help to keep the world’s attention focused on ending the seal hunt! Here are a few more things that you can do:

Remember, we’ll continue to apply the heat as long as the hunt continues. It’s a ghastly practice, and the scale of the cruelty requires our persistence and perseverance.

Thank you for your continued support during this tragic time on the ice floes of Canada.

Sincerely,

Rebecca Aldworth
Director of Animal Programs
Humane Society International/Canada

Dear Suffering Animals , I’m so very sorry …

Dear Suffering Animals , I’m so sorry

dogs_cages1.jpgI wish there’s more that I could help

I think about you who are defenceless against we humans,

little dogs caged in wire confines yelping away, taken away from your parents days after you were born.

caged in that little space living in your own urine and faeces..scarcely a concern of those who profit from your sale
for mommy dogs, never to have experienced the clean sensation of a fresh smelling bath, humped on each period to breed and bear puppies in the puppy mills,

each offspring whisked off somewhere or killed, depending on their conditions , for in-breeding triggers abnormalities which the rich would be horrified to see in the cute puppy trade

Panting from the sweltering heat of the day, how we need to lap up some clean water that’s nowhere in sight

in the cold months of Fall and Winter, how we long to be in your houses , where warm lights glow and shimmer behind the curtained windows. ..some days, my caged companions never wake up from their frozen slumber after spasmodic shudders in the night

I think about you — the family of African elephants trying to escape from the firing squad, always hiding somewhere for you

…not many escape, those who do have shot wounds in their flesh that fester with maggots in the savanna plains,

attack_seal1.jpgand your unfortunate loved ones collapse to the ground injured, stricken by armour-piercing bullets, while my human poachers run excitedly towards their prized catch of the day

My heart pains for the baby seals bludgeoned to semi-consciousness, while their moms plead for mercy at the hunters swiping away at their heads to deal that crucial blow

Consider it lucky to suffer an instantaneous death , or else suffer an ignominious pain while my human hunters tear off your blood-soaked coat of fur in your throes of slow death… I cringe at the thought of your skin-less baby freshly stripped and tossed into the mass of red snow, alive,  in extreme pain and crying till it whimpers its last breath.

Somewhere in a lab, the lights turn on a few minutes before office hours, and you wonder, what’s going to happen to us today? We scutter about nervously in our cages; somewhere frantic screeches could be heard.

Will I or my fellow caged friends suffer the excruciating pain and torture?

At that instant, somewhere on many TVs and myriad communication media, flashy commercials beckon with the latest new formula shampoos, anti-ageing cream and body wash

a pair of gloved hands reaches in and grabs a struggling rabbit, injects some fluid into its arteries . As its taut muscles relaxes, liquid chemicals are deftly applied to its eyes and shaven skin during its sleep

it wakes up with an unstoppable burn…blinded by the chemicals, too abrasive for the next new formula. Oops, this doesn’t work, notes the researcher

Sometimes, I wish there was no birth.

I wish animals never have sex, I wish eggs never hatched

for in many cases, it’s better never to have an opportunity to live, and then be sentenced to a life of misery which grows worse each day

clicktoplay3.pngFoie gras, veal, farmed chicken….anyone ?

A calf snatched away from its mother and confined for the rest of its life in its small pen to keep its meat supple, so that we may enjoy tender veal ? NOT ME !

Geese and ducks machine-pumped with food through their beaks forced open by strong farm-hands

It’s not a meal-time to look forward to I bet… each passing day, these ducks and geese grow weaker with a bloating liver that increases to reach foie gras proportions, that’s the time to be served in some high-end restaurant

> Visit NoFoieGras.org to see how it is made

Chickens in cages, well, the story goes on…as long as their trip along the never-ending roads,

Transported from one place to another in their tight coops, their beaks gasping for air from the pack crammed into a tight crate, amidst the foulness of their dried droppings and tongues parched from the heat and thirst

no option to rest, stand they must with the rest of the pack.

The many which collapse from mere exhaustion can only be discovered when their journey ends , as live chickens are wrenched away from the coops into a processing centre, and they topple to be chucked into some grinding machine with a petrified squawk

Animals may not be smarter than any one of us humans (except perhaps dolphins), but each one has a life like ours.

They experience fear and the sensation of pain.

I’m not sure how to ask humans to change their perspective on animals, to treat them with care

if only love for animals was fostered at a young age to nurture compassion!

Would humans care to spend some time putting themselves in the shoes of these animals ? Perhaps they don’t have the time, or see no need to.

What if humans were one day to be dominated by some other “superior”, or more powerful species and be treated like these animals ?

I wonder.

My Letter to Oprah Winfrey

dogs1.jpg

The few days after Oprah featured a show on Puppy Mills, I was quite depressed about the level of mistreatment humans are capable of meting out to animals that are defenceless and incapable of protecting themselves. Think about :

baby seal hunts,

rodeos and circuses where animals suffer in the process for human “entertainment”

unnecessary experiments on rabbits to develop the newest anti-ageing cream or new formula for shampoos,

caging of chickens for their entire lives,

enslaving a calf in a small pen after its birth to create veal,

force-feeding goose using a food pump until they die from swollen livers for their foire gras ,

poor living conditions and caging of dogs in puppy mills, etc etc

Now Oprah’s viewers and fans come from all strata of society. Can Oprah or her executives galvanise these influential people into some form of positive action to help animals ?

In my little own way, I created a modest blog in the hopes that more people would learn about tortured animals and inform them about the choices they make in every day life. I strive to buy animal-friendly shampoos and body lotions, consume free-range eggs, avoid veal and foire gras altogether , and eat more fruits and vegetables, and avoid from buying puppies from a puppy mill if I intend to have a dog.

We can all play a part in making humans more humane. On behalf of all the helpless animals, please, please form a powerful clout and speak out for these voiceless creatures. Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Nicole Ritchie, Hannah Montana - please help save these animals as well. Imagine the magic you can do by going around to schools to educate young children and teenagers !
