Good News for Animals

I’m happy to share with you good news for these animals, thanks to the hard work of the People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals. Quoting a letter from PETA:

Animals No Longer Given Away as Carnival Prizes

Winn-Dixie Takes First Step Ever to Improve Farmed-Animal Welfare

When someone contacted us about a Dalhart, Texas, carnival in which live rabbits, ducks, and chicks were being given away as prizes at a ring-toss booth, PETA was on the case right away. Many of these animals were reportedly being drowned, run over, tossed off Ferris wheels, and dumped alive into trash cans by the people who won them. PETA convinced the carnival operator to adopt a permanent policy against using animals as prizes, and the ring-toss vendor’s contract was terminated.

You might think that a case like this is rare, but it isn’t at all. PETA handles hundreds of individual cruelty cases just like this one every month—and every time, we do whatever we can to get positive results for the animals involved. > A blog entry about this issue

Verizon Pulls Ad With Harmful Message About Pit Bulls

Factory Farmers Charged With Cruelty to Animals

Telecommunications giant Verizon is no longer running a cell phone commercial that featured two growling, chained pit bulls—whose ears were cut in a “fighting crop”—guarding a junkyard. Pit bulls are possibly the most abused breed of dogs, and this commercial sent the message that it is acceptable to chain them to junked cars and use them as cheap security devices. According to animal behaviorists (and common sense), chained dogs often become agitated, frustrated, and aggressively protective of their tiny territories. When chained dogs break free, children are most often the victims of their aggression.

PETA contacted Verizon about the ad’s damaging message, but Verizon failed to respond. So PETA issued an action alert to our members, which generated more than 7,000 e-mails to two company executives! Two days after PETA contacted Verizon, the ad was gone! With your help, PETA continues to work to get anti-chaining ordinances passed and to quash the cruelty of using dogs as disposable toys and living burglar alarms.

This little case is the latest example of PETA pressure that has caused a major corporation to drop an ad that uses live animals in a disrespectful manner or depicts animals in any way that could contribute to their suffering. Subaru, Honda, and PUMA are just a few of the other companies we’ve changed for the better.

Anjelica Huston Helps Expose Cruelty to Great Apes

Four Strikes Against Elephant Abuse

PETA’s exposé on the abuse of great apes by the film, television, and advertising industries was recently distributed to all major U.S. studios. Academy Award winner Anjelica Huston narrates our powerful video, which urges people in the entertainment industry never to use great apes. She describes how newborn chimpanzees and orangutans are taken away from their highly protective mothers and often beaten with fists and blackjacks—and even kicked in the head—during terrifying training sessions.

The video features undercover footage taken by a PETA investigator at a pseudo-sanctuary where we found a chimpanzee who reportedly had been used in the filming of Planet of the Apes. This poor old chimpanzee was living in an underground cement pit strewn with rotted food and feces. Many “performing” chimpanzees suffer similar fates; they are simply discarded or sold away to shoddy roadside zoos or given to pseudo-sanctuaries when they grow too strong to be handled. The video received a hearty endorsement by the Los Angeles Times and is making waves throughout the entertainment industry.

This is the latest salvo in our campaign to help great apes—and it’s working. As a direct result of PETA’s efforts, great apes are no longer used in ads run by numerous companies, including Honda, PUMA, Subaru, MovieTickets.com, furniture chain HomeUSA Warehouse, Keds, Yahoo!, and car dealership Malouf Ford. That’s great news!

None of these important victories for animals could have been won without the support of PETA members like you. Thank you for giving PETA the power to fight and win the battle against animal abuse!

Kind regards,

Ingrid Newkirk

Saving animal lives as easy as ABC : Jenna Jameson urges YOU to take action

Each year, 7 to 8 million dogs and cats are dropped off at pounds and animal shelters—and 3 to 4 million of them will be euthanized. Many are sick and injured, but most are healthy, lovable animals who have no one to take them in. Many more are homeless. This is an enormous tragedy, but it’s one that can be solved. We simply need to start practicing our ABCs: Animal Birth Control.

PETA is educating cat and dog guardians nationwide about the importance of spaying or neutering their animal companions. We’re also performing thousands of free and low-cost sterilizations with our “Spay and Neuter Immediately, Please!” (SNIP) and Animal Birth Control (ABC) mobile clinics. By preventing the birth of unwanted animals, we can save millions of them from abuse, neglect, or abandonment at animal shelters, on the streets, or wherever they are dumped.

You can help us teach America its ABCs
. By donating to PETA today, we can reach more people with our important message about spaying and neutering, and together we can help “fix” the overpopulation crisis.

Thank you for your compassionate support.

Very truly yours,

Ingrid Newkirk

U.S. nude swimmer defies ban on animal rights protest in Beijing Olympics 2008

U.S. swimmer Amanda Beard unveiled a demure nude photograph of herself urging women “Don’t wear fur” on Wednesday, hours after Chinese authorities had prevented her from her staging a news conference for “safety” reasons.

“What happens with animals when their skin is ripped from their bodies when they are still alive, it’s heartbreaking for me,” she said. The Olympics provided a great platform for making those views known, she added. > More

Senator Barack Obama adopting a dog from a shelter is a wise choice

Filed under: All, Animal love, Celebrities who Care, News about Animals, Puppy Mills — Compassion @ 5:03 pm

Senator Obama and his family have said that, win or lose, they’re going to add a dog to their family after the election this November.

That’s a great idea. But I hope they decide to adopt one from their local shelter. Why? Because as long as people still buy their pets from pet stores and commercial breeders, millions of abandoned pets are killed in shelters across the country every year.

So here’s one issue that’s truly bi-partisan – one that we can all agree on. Let’s ask our national leaders always to adopt their pets from shelters, rather than buying them from pet stores.

Members of Best Friends Animal Society have started a petition to invite the Obama family to do just that. Whether you’re a Democrat or a Republican, left-wing, right-wing or any other wing, you can make a bipartisan difference by signing our petition at ObamaFamilyDog.com, and encouraging all your friends and family to sign it, too.

Thanks for thinking about the nation’s homeless pets!

Join Pink in Signing Petition to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages in New York City

Filed under: All, Celebrities who Care, Cruelty to Animals, Facts surrounding Animals — Compassion @ 5:20 pm

Outspoken rocker Pink appears on a billboard in Times Square to support New York City Council Member Tony Avella’s groundbreaking legislation that would ban horse-drawn carriages in the city!

If you’re not already familiar with the cruelty and danger of the horse-drawn carriage industry, please watch this short clip from the new documentary Blinders, and we know that you’ll want to take action to ensure that this abusive industry is finally abolished.

Every year, the list of accidents involving horse-drawn carriages grows longer. Horses are often forced to labor in freezing and sweltering temperatures while walking on hard pavement, dodging cars, and inhaling exhaust fumes. After decades of controversy, it has become clear that additional rules and monitoring make no difference in the lives of these at-risk and dispirited animals. The only humane solution is a permanent ban on horse-drawn carriages.

Please sign the petition below here to support the ban on horse-drawn carriages in New York City. We will send the petition to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the New York City Council to show that residents and tourists alike support the compassionate ban on horse-drawn carriages.

“Every time I see a horse-drawn carriage in a concrete jungle, I point and yell ‘animal cruelty’ at the top of my lungs to try to make the driver and occupants as uncomfortable as possible,” says Pink. “It honestly hurts my heart when I think of what those horses must be feeling, as far as anxiety and fear, and how unnatural and wrong it is for these animals to have blinders on, trotting up and down on concrete, while taxis blare and people scream. It’s absolutely unnatural and ignorant of us to continue this outdated tradition. What about this is romantic?”

Animals suffer in Rodeos & Stampedes

Did you know?

  • Horses and bulls have broken their neck or back in bucking events.
  • Cattle have broken a leg in roping events.
  • Calf roping causes severe bruising around the throat.
  • Flank straps, spurs and electric prods are used to make animals buck.
  • Rodeos are brutal events that cause stress and injury to animals for the sake of entertainment.
  • The RSPCA is opposed to rodeos because of the risk of injury.

To find out more about rodeos, read the rest of the document by clicking here (original source) or visit http://www.animalliberation.org.au/rodeos.php.
