Tell Indonesia to Ban Live-Animal Imports

Filed under: All — Compassion @ 1:46 pm

Every year, millions of animals are transported on long journeys that end in violent slaughter in a process called “live export.” Nearly 400,000 animals are exported hundreds of miles from Australia to Indonesia every year, and many more animals are shipped from Australia to countries throughout the Middle East and Asia. The animals are often jammed together onto extremely crowded multilevel ships, where there are so many animals and so few workers that sufficient husbandry and veterinary care are often denied. With often filthy conditions and temperatures that sometimes exceed 40°C , painful and debilitating diseases—such as salmonellosis (a type of gastroenteritis), pneumonia, and scabby mouth—frequently run rampant. Thousands of animals die during live export every year.

In many countries that import live animals, when animals reach their destination, they are often lined up to wait—sometimes longer than two days—to be unloaded. Many animals who cannot stand are beaten with metal bars and kicked by workers. If they cannot walk or crawl, they are often dragged off the ship by their ears and legs.

The next stop for the animals in most countries is the live-animal market. The animals are bought by small operators or people who slaughter animals at their homes. For transport, animals are often tied up in car trunks or on motorbikes or thrown on roof racks or in the backs of trucks. Already weak from harsh transport conditions, the animals can only watch helplessly as their shipmates are killed, and they fearfully await their fate.

At slaughter, the animals’ leg tendons are often cut, and their throats are cut while they are still conscious.

The only way to stop the atrocities of live-animal imports is to ban the trade.

> Please urge the Indonesian Minister of Agriculture to ban live-animal imports immediately .

Whose Skin Are You In?Whose Skin Are You In?
The question is simple: “Whose skin are you in?” Watch PETA’s new video, which exposes the cruelty that goes into every piece of leather, fur, wool, and exotic skin used for “fashion.” Then sign the pledge that says the only skin that you’re in is your own.

Soy Milk excellent substitute for contaminated milk in my coffee and cereal

Filed under: Cruelty to Animals, Facts surrounding Animals, Farm Abuse Practices — Tags: , — Compassion @ 6:58 pm

Hey I just discovered somethin’.  I found that using the SILK (original) brand of soy milk, my coffee tasted better than milk ! The same goes for my crunchy cereal. (PS I’m your average consumer and I do not work for SILK. )

What does dairy milk contain ?

FOR YOUR HEALTH :

The late Dr. Benjamin Spock, America’s leading authority on child care, spoke out against feeding cow’s milk to children, saying it can cause anemia, allergies, and insulin-dependent diabetes and in the long term, will set kids up for obesity and heart disease, America’s number one cause of death.

Dairy products are a health hazard. They contain no fiber or complex carbohydrates and are laden with saturated fat and cholesterol. They are contaminated with cow’s blood and pus and are frequently contaminated with pesticides, hormones, and antibiotics. Dairy products are linked to allergies, constipation, obesity, heart disease, cancer, and other diseases.

And dairy products may actually cause osteoporosis, not prevent it, since their high-protein content leaches calcium from the body. Population studies, backed up by a groundbreaking Harvard study of more than 75,000 nurses, suggest that drinking milk can actually cause osteoporosis. Find out more by visiting our links page.

Tell Rabbi to Stop Abusing Chickens in Kapporos Ritual Sacrifices

Please watch PETA’s new video about ritual sacrifice horrors during annual religious ceremonies.

The footage is from PETA’s investigations of the Jewish atonement and sacrifice ritual kapporos, which is performed in Hasidic communities in the days before Yom Kippur.

In Brooklyn alone, more than 50,000 chickens are trucked in for kapporos ceremonies, in which chickens are roughly waved over people’s heads and then slaughtered. The chickens languish without food and water and are stacked in cramped, filthy transport crates on public streets for hours. Many don’t even survive until slaughter.

Many Jewish communities use money for kapporos instead of live chickens—the money is then donated to tzedakah (charity).

Rabbi Shea Hecht of the National Committee for Furtherance of Jewish Education (NCFJE) runs the largest—and arguably the most inhumane—kapporos operation in Brooklyn. PETA has filmed some of the worst abuses and cruelest conditions at Rabbi Hecht’s location. For more information on this practice and what you can do to help, click here.

Please write to Rabbi Hecht, the National Committee for Furtherance of Jewish Education (NCFJE), and representatives of Beis Din of Crown Heights—the kosher agency that certifies this kapporos operation—to demand that Rabbi Hecht no longer use live chickens for this ritual.

Please also forward this important information to your friends and family.

Thank you for all that you do for animals!

Sincerely,

How could anyone forget the video footage captured by an undercover HSUS investigator of helpless cows being dragged by chains, jabbed with forklifts, poked in the eyes with electric prods, blasted with high-pressure water hoses to simulate drowning, and otherwise tormented at a slaughter plant?

Not only did it shock the nation, but it also led to the largest meat recall in U.S. history. Tell the USDA to stop the cruelty now — time is running out!

We thank you for all of your support following our investigations and urge you to take action today so that cattle who are too sick or injured even to stand will no longer be subjected to the slaughter process or end up in the food supply.

As a result of our investigations, the USDA is finally considering closing a loophole in federal regulations to stop these practices. The agency needs to hear from as many people as possible in the next week. Please speak up for these crippled animals!

Send your comments to the USDA today
(Deadline: September 26, 2008) to let the agency know that the public will not tolerate the cruel treatment of animals who cannot even stand or walk.

Sincerely,

Wayne Pacelle
President  & CEO
The Humane Society of the United States
