Animals suffer in Rodeos & Stampedes

Did you know?

  • Horses and bulls have broken their neck or back in bucking events.
  • Cattle have broken a leg in roping events.
  • Calf roping causes severe bruising around the throat.
  • Flank straps, spurs and electric prods are used to make animals buck.
  • Rodeos are brutal events that cause stress and injury to animals for the sake of entertainment.
  • The RSPCA is opposed to rodeos because of the risk of injury.

To find out more about rodeos, read the rest of the document by clicking here (original source) or visit http://www.animalliberation.org.au/rodeos.php.

James Bond Roger Moore sets his sights on Foie Gras Cruelty

Animal lovers Vounteers’ voice and effort produce results

It is with heartfelt gratitude and appreciation, both from the bottom of my heart, and the hundreds of geese and ducks, each with a precious life of its own, that Mistral Bistro, has decided to take Foie Gras off its menu. Mistral Bistro now joins the increasing number of restaurants which have made a compassionate decision to stop cruel cuisine. This is only made possible by dedicated volunteers who have given their valuable time to lobby, protest and write to the restaurant against serving foie gras.

Some may wonder, why the big deal ? Personally for me, foie gras is cruel cuisine. Please visit the websites below to learn more :

1) Facts about Foie Gras at http://www.nofoiegras.org/

2) James Bond Roger Moore sets his sights on Foie Gras Cruelty at http://www.peta.org.uk/feat/RogerMoore.asp

4) Click here for ideas as to how you can help in your local area/ community: How you can help at http://www.liberationbc.com/campaigns

Meanwhile, please continue to contact the restaurants that still serve foie gras to ask them politely to remove cruel cuisine from their menu (attaching some information for educational materials will also be useful for their understanding), and do let Liberation BC know of any responses which you receive.

What’s wrong with PetSmart stores ?

I was shocked to read the following article (excerpt below) :

The small animals sold at PetSmart cost the multibillion-dollar company next to nothing and make up a minuscule percentage of the company’s total sales. So why does PetSmart buy them by the thousands only to leave them to die from disease and injury?

The answer is simple. Adorable hamsters are frequently bought on impulse when parents can’t resist their child’s pleading. The hamster may not cost much, but supplies add up quickly. Cages, bedding, food, and other paraphernalia amount to millions of dollars in annual profit.

PetSmart sells birds and other animals to people who often buy them on impulse and don’t have a clue about how to care for them properly. Just as there are puppy mills, there are enormous bird factories and massive animal “suppliers,” where breeders warehouse thousands of “breeding stock,” whose babies are taken away and sold. Regulation of such massive facilities is often lax or non-existent, leaving the monitoring of breeders to the company itself—and leaving the animals to suffer the consequences. > Full article & Video here > Photo Gallery .

Woman lobbying for humane end for horses

A P.E.I. woman has begun an e-mail campaign to ensure that rules are enforced after the release of a video showing potential problems at a horse slaughterhouse in Saskatchewan.

‘The horses end up getting … butchered alive.’— Jana Hemphill, stable owner

“Horses have fought wars for us, horses have ploughed our fields, they’ve allowed themselves to be a mode of transportation, they’re our pets, they’re our companions, they’re Olympic athletes,” …..

“They’ve given so much to us, and to me they just deserve a better end.”

Disaster response continues in China and Myanmar

Hi ! Thanks for reading. It’s been a busy week but animals have always been on my mind. I was just walking my dog when I realised how unconditionally loving it is — a pure hearted creature unrestrained in its love and concern for those who care for him.

I just want to vindicate a “Thank You” note from one of the responders to my request for volunteers on her observation of how self-less dogs are, and protective of their care-givers, and yet, despite how potentially loving these animals are, how some humans treat them in return.

I received the following appeals from some animal welfare organizations. Please help however you can:

HSI has not given up on animals in these disaster-stricken countries. We are supporting local groups on the ground in China and our response team is preparing to enter Myanmar this weekend.

Support HSI’s International Disaster Fund and help our relief efforts for animal victims of disasters around the world.

More about Thoroughbred Horse Racing

“Eight Belles” Should Sound the End of Racetrack Betting
Just after crossing the finish line in the Kentucky Derby on May 3, 2008, a young filly named Eight Belles collapsed when both of her front ankles snapped. She was euthanized in the dirt where she lay, the latest victim of the dirty business of thoroughbred racing.

Eight Belles’ death is yet another reminder that these horses are raced when they are so young that their bones have not properly formed, and they are often raced on surfaces that are too hard for their bones—like the hard track at Churchill Downs. Eight Belles’ jockey whipped her mercilessly as she came down the final stretch. This is no great surprise, since trainers, owners, and jockeys are all driven by the desire to make money, leaving the horses to suffer terribly.
