Foie gras, considered by some to be a delicacy, is produced by forcing a long metal pipe down the throats of ducks and geese and force-feeding them massive amounts of grain, resulting in their livers swelling to up to 10 times their normal size.
Two to three times a day, a worker grabs each bird, shoves a long, thick metal tube all the way down his throat, and an air pump shoots up to two pounds of corn mush into his esophagus… > read more and share these facts with others .
Breeding toms (male turkeys) languish for roughly one year in dark crowded pens and are typically handled twice a week during “milking†sessions to collect their semen. Their legs are secured in a clamp on a bench, and then the bird is held over the lap of a worker who induces the turkey to ejaculate. The semen is collected through a suction hose and mixed with the semen of other toms.
For each of these breeding males there are more than 20 breeding hens who are also subjected to overcrowding and abusive handling. Roughly twice a week, hens are herded into a room, then one after another, they are held upside down, “cracked open†(as termed by industry representatives) and inseminated in assembly line fashion. As with the males, the females’ legs are clamped into metal forceps during the process as laborers race to inseminate an average of 1,200-1,400 hens within two hours. A worker described how young hens are curious and friendly with employees “until the first couple AIs – and then they run from you…†…more from AdoptATurkey.org
These puppies are acquired through puppy mills. Purchasing from them only helps promote the puppy mill businesses. Most of the time these puppies are far from a bargain as many times buyers will encountered huge veterinary bills. Puppy mills are mass producers of puppies that bred with no regard to health issues. Dogs are interbred in unsanitary conditions, puppies are taken away from the mother too early and many die while being transported, female dogs are bred as often as they come in heat and bred until they are physically not able to be bred any longer and then they are destroyed. The animals that you will find at any of these adoption facilities are as beautiful and loving as any you will find in any pet store, and they really need our help. Many of these animals have been victims of neglect and abuse, and deserve a good home. As an added bonus, most of the animals at shelters and through the Animal Control offices have already been given their shots, and are usually spayed/neutered already for you. Please help these animals > adopt a shelter pet .

One of the most powerful tools we have for preventing cruelty to animals is education. It is important to plant the seeds of kindness in children early, and to nurture their development as the child grows. Children not only need to learn what they shouldn’t do, but also what they can and should do. When children see that their pets are happy and loving, it will make the child feel good, too. This in turn will help the children care for their pets’ feelings.
However, since people don’t always realize that they are being cruel, adults need education, too. If you are not a teacher, please urge your local schools to integrate humane education into their curricula. If you are a teacher, bring humane education into your classroom. To help you, your local shelter may have outreach programs, education materials, camps, etc. .. read more from the American Society of Prevention of Cruelty To Animals .
By a fortuitous event, I chanced upon Veggie Karma’s blog which contained a quote about rodeo training in North America from the book No Nonsense Guide to Animal Rights:
(Quote) In modern day rodeos, tame horses and bulls are sometimes given electric shocks to get them ‘bucking’ or have straps squeezed around their lower abdomens to put pressure on their groin areas. Apart from this kind of discomfort, animals are sometimes seriously injured and even killed at the rodeo. A USDA meat inspector said that the rodeo horses and cows that come to slaughterhouses are so terribly bruised that there are few places where the skin is actually attached to the muscle. Animals also commonly have broken ribs and punctured lungs .(unquote)
So, effectively, the rodeo owners, participants and the audience entertain themselves watching animals writhe in pain, get severely injured and crippled, and then dragged to the slaughterhouse. Whence did Man’s conscience disappear ?
You might have contacted a company that confidently states “we don’t test our products on animals.” The truth is that companies can make whatever claim they like and are not legally regulated to ensure the accuracy of their testing claims. To learn more, please refer to the Animal Protection Institute .
