Watch video on seal hunt

We’ll be here until the seal hunt is stopped — with your help.

Watch the video.

Warning! Very graphic images.

We’re not going anywhere
until the seal hunt ends.
But we need your help.

Today, I want to bring you the latest news from the front lines.

Just before dawn this morning, the annual commercial hunt for baby seals began.

Over the next few weeks, 275,000 harp seals will be brutally clubbed or shot for their fur. Many people believe that Canada ended this hunt in the 1980s, but it’s still happening — right now. That’s why the sealers don’t want us here with our cameras rolling.

For four years, Humane Society International’s ProtectSeals team has stood its ground as Canada’s extraordinary harp seal nurseries are transformed each spring into bloody killing fields. The sealers have rammed our cars, smashed our boats, and brandished the very same clubs that they use to kill baby seals — all in a vain attempt to intimidate us.

Then yesterday, the government took an unprecedented step: It refused to issue hunt observation permits to our team — and to journalists — in time for us to document the slaughter this morning. This means that sealers, if they have reached the seals by now, are killing baby seals without witnesses. Which is exactly what they want.

Watch our video to see what we’re up against. It’s hard to watch (and you can skip it if you prefer). But it shows why we’ll remain here, steadfast, until Canada ends this barbaric hunt for good. Exposing the hunt is the surest way I know to stop it forever.

Your support is essential. We are closer than ever to putting a permanent end to this atrocity. Markets for seal products are closing — in recent years, ten countries have either ended their trade in seal products or announced their intentions to do so. The European Union is considering a ban. Prices paid to Canadian seal hunters for seal skins are falling. And more than 3,500 businesses and half a million people have pledged to avoid Canadian seafood for as long as the commercial seal hunt continues, providing a strong economic incentive for the Canadian government to stop it.

As another year’s slaughter begins, watch our video now — and then please make a donation to sustain our team on the ice and end this hunt once and for all.

The sealers don’t want us here, but with your support, we’ll continue the fight until the cruel hunt ends.

Sincerely,
Rebecca Aldworth
Director of Animal Programs

Speak out for seals

Help IFAW end the seal hunt
Please take action now

On the opening day of the Gulf seal hunt, IFAW monitors bore witness to the astounding cruelty of baby seals being shot in loose ice. One sealing vessel followed by an IFAW team searched out small pans of ice for seal pups, firing at seals on slushy, moving ice.

Seals were seen in agony after being shot at and injured, but not instantly killed. One seal was hauled alive onto the deck of the boat with a steel hook before finally being beaten to death.

Tell the world in your own words why such cruelty to animals is wrong!

The lack of ice in the Southern Gulf this year led to a mortality rate for baby seals estimated at more than 90%, yet sealers continued to wipe out the last remaining survivors. Despite the tragedy of global warming to seal breeding habitat, the Canadian government gave sealers permission to kill 270,000 seals.

The Cruel Seal Hunt Continues

attack_seal.jpgIn early March the ice floes of Eastern Canada are a breathtaking vision: an endless sea and sky filled with white as far as the eye can see. In one of nature’s most beautiful spectacles, hundreds of thousands of baby harp seals call out to their mothers, alone on the ice for the first time.

But then the sealing ships arrive. What was once a scene of peace and innocence becomes a makeshift factory of terror and cruelty as the ice is covered in blood. These helpless baby seals, some as young as two weeks old, are clubbed or shot to death for their fur. Many will even be skinned alive or die trapped under the ice after being injured.

IFAW hunt monitors risk their lives each year by taking to the ice to film the hunt, documenting the cruelty and sharing the truth about the seal hunt with the rest of the world.

With nearly 95,000 actions taken to help end Canada’s commercial seal hunt this past year alone, IFAW supporters like you are making a huge difference. Visit the seal blog to learn what IFAW and its supporters are doing to stop the seal hunt.

In just the last few months:

  • The Canadian sealing industry declared it was in a “crisis” due to the growing opposition to seal products in Europe.
  • Sales of seal pelts remain sluggish, and prices remain low, as the market for seal pelts is saturated and demand for this unnecessary product disappears.
  • Germany took important steps towards a ban on the import of seal products. They join the US, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, France, Mexico and Croatia in speaking out against Canada’s cruel, unsustainable, and unnecessary slaughter of harp seal pups.
  • The European Food Safety Authority released a scientific opinion on seal hunting, which stated that effective killing does not always occur, sealers often do not comply with the regulations and that animals may suffer pain and distress.
  • IFAW hunt monitors showed the world the tragic truth about what is happening to the hundreds of thousands of baby seals who died as a result of poor ice conditions or at the hands of sealers.

In the coming year, IFAW will continue to alert politicians and the public to the many problems with the hunt, document alleged violations of the Marine Mammal Regulations and support crucial scientific research on harp seal population issues.

The majority of Canadians are opposed to the hunting of seal pups under any circumstances. Together, we can help make their wishes come true.

Sincerely,

Fred O’Regan
President

Urge the Minister of International Trade to stop the seal hunt

seals-header-hsi-canada.jpg

This year, the Canadian government will allow fishermen to slaughter 275,000 baby seals for their fur — 5,000 more than last year. They will be clubbed or shot and skinned in the largest commercial hunt of marine mammals in the world.

I have joined more than 545,000 people worldwide in opposing the cruel seal hunt. Together, we can make the Canadian government end this hunt. I urge you to join me in stopping the seal hunt forever.

> Please take action today to help end the cruel commercial seal hunt by sending an e-mail to Canada’s Minister of International Trade, David Emerson, immediately. Thank you!

Pamela Anderson Slams J-Lo ( Jennifer Lopez ) for Wearing Fur

pam1.jpgThe former Baywatch diva has become a well-known supporter of PETA’s actions

Pamela Anderson continues PETA’s anti-fur campaign.
The former Baywatch star has slammed famous singers Jennifer Lopez and Sean “Diddy” Combs for wearing fur.

Anderson, who has been supporting the actions of animal rights activists People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), insists that fur manufacturers are lavishing pelts on “clueless celebrities” hoping to promote a comeback, according to femalefirst.co.uk
“It amazes me that some designers still turn animals into fashion victims”, Anderson said.
“They’re desperate for a fur ‘comeback’ so they throw their pelts at any clueless celebrity, like Diddy or J.Lo, who’ll wear whatever is free. (…) I’ve written to them all to say that these animals are dying in agony - all for a tacky coat that makes you look like Bigfoot”, the former Playboy star added.

“Seriously, a fur coat just adds 20 years and 20 pounds to you, and if you get rained on you smell like a wet dog”, Anderson concluded.

Animal Cruelty and the U.S. Beef Recall

RaeLeann Smith is a circus specialist with the animal rights organization PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). She works to educate people about the cruelty involved in circuses and other animal acts and meets with legislators to develop ordinances that protect animals used for entertainment. She is currently working to promote legislation in Chicago that would be the strongest elephant protection law in the United States. In an article also posted at the Britannica Blog, Smith discusses the rampant abuse of animals and loose enforcement of health regulations at U.S. slaughterhouses.

Downed calfHere is an excerpt from RaeLeann’s article : In the wake of the largest beef recall in U.S. history—which included 37 million pounds of meat that was sent to schools—lawmakers are questioning whether the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is doing its job and whether the meat supplied to the school-lunch program is safe. The answer to both queries is a resounding “No,” and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is encouraging meat-eaters to rethink their food choices.

On February 17, the USDA announced that it was recalling 143 million pounds of meat produced at the Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company in Chino, California. An undercover investigator from The Humane Society of the United States caught workers at this facility using a forklift to shove “downed” animals—those who were too sick or injured to walk—onto the killing floor.

Take the ProtectSeals Petition Challenge to Stop Cruel Seal Hunts

Within weeks, Canada’s beautiful harp seal nursery will be transformed into a scene of bloody carnage. The Canadian government will allow 275,000 seals—almost all of them babies as young as 12 days old—to be killed for their fur this year.

But there is new hope for the seals. Right now, the European Commission is considering proposing legislation that would ban seal product trade in the European Union—a move many believe could spell the end of commercial seal hunting globally.

Please take action today to let the EU know you support this ban! Click here to sign the petition. Then, after you’ve signed, please ask your friends to sign it, too.

The five people who get the most friends to sign this pledge will win a cool new seals T-shirt designed by “America’s Next Top Model” judge and world renowned fashion photographer Nigel Barker! And everyone who forwards the pledge will have the option to download one of Nigel’s beautiful seal photos to use as wallpaper for their computer. Read all of the details and contest rules here.

TUCSON, Ariz. - About 800 small dogs, including Chihuahuas, terriers and Pomeranians, were seized from a triple-wide mobile home whose occupants were overwhelmed trying to care for the animals, authorities said Wednesday.

Pima County sheriff’s deputies and animal welfare officials who removed the dogs also found 82 caged parrots in the home in a rural area northwest of Tucson.

Some dogs were pregnant and giving birth as they were taken to shelters in Tucson, said Jenny Rose, a spokeswoman for the Humane Society of Southern Arizona. Ninety-six dogs were taken from the house Monday and another 700 on Wednesday, she said.

“The home was definitely in very bad condition, urine and feces all over the home, in the kitchen and bedroom, with a very strong odor,” she said. “Obviously, 800 dogs in a triple-wide mobile home, they were packed in there.

Seal cubs threatened by global warming, WWF warns

Filed under: All, Facts surrounding Animals, News about Animals — Compassion @ 5:30 pm

seal1.jpg Hundreds of newborn seal cubs risk dying of hunger and cold because global warming is making ice in the Arctic Circle melt too fast, the World Wide Fund for Nature in Germany warned Monday.Seal cubs spend the first weeks of their lives in burrows dug in the ice sheet but if that melts, they find themselves in the ocean before they have built up a fat layer that will enable them to survive, WWF’s Cathrin Muenster said.

“When the ice melts too fast, the cubs end up in the ice water before they have their insulating fat layer, and they die painfully of hunger and cold.” (Source : Yahoo News - http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080310/sc_afp/germanyclimatewarming)
